Connecting the dots – Understanding Schemas in Early Years

What you'll learn

What you’ll learn

Understanding schemas strengthens professional practice by helping practitioners interpret children’s repeated patterns of exploration as meaningful learning. You will explore how these patterns act as children’s “research projects,” forming the building blocks for cognitive, physical and emotional development.

The training examines the nine key schemas, including Transporting, Trajectory and Enclosing, and considers the role of the adult in “spotting the learning.” Practitioners will develop the confidence to use observation and professional judgement to respond intentionally, adapting environments and interactions to support sustained engagement.

This session will deepen understanding of enabling environments and loose parts play, grounded in Piaget and Vygotsky’s theory, enabling practitioners to confidently support children’s natural curiosity and sustained engagement.

This schemas course will enable practitioners to:
• Understand what schemas are and why they matter
• Recognise common schemas in everyday play
• Feel confident responding to schemas in your setting
• Use schema thinking to support behaviour and planning
