Recent Nursery Headlines Remind Us of One Thing: Safeguarding Starts Long Before an Inspection

A team of practitioners discussing safeguarding in the setting

Over the past few weeks, safeguarding has once again become a national conversation within the early years sector.

The BBC documentary Nursery Scandals: What Went Wrong? brought to light several tragic and deeply distressing cases, including the death of toddler Noah and historic abuse carried out by individuals working within nursery settings. Alongside this, reports of safeguarding action being taken against nursery providers and the Government’s announcement of an additional 3,000 surprise Ofsted inspections each year have placed safeguarding firmly back in the spotlight.

For nursery owners and leaders, these headlines may feel uncomfortable to read.

They should.

Not because they are designed to create fear, but because they remind us of something we should never lose sight of:

Safeguarding is not something we prepare for when Ofsted arrives. It is something we live every single day.

Safeguarding Is More Than Policies and Procedures

Every nursery has safeguarding policies.

Every nursery has procedures.

Every nursery knows that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.

But safeguarding is far more than documents sitting in a folder.

It is reflected in everyday practice.

It is evident in the conversations teams have.

It is seen in how concerns are raised, listened to and acted upon.

It is demonstrated through confident leadership, effective supervision and a culture where every member of staff understands their role in keeping children safe.

Strong safeguarding isn’t created overnight. It is built through consistency.

The Question Every Nursery Leader Should Ask

The recent headlines shouldn’t leave us asking:

“Could that happen here?”

Instead, they should encourage a more constructive question:

“How confident am I that our safeguarding culture is as strong as it can be?”

That means considering:

  • Would every member of staff know exactly what to do if they had a safeguarding concern?
  • Are safeguarding discussions part of everyday practice, not just annual training?
  • Is your Designated Safeguarding Lead supported, confident and up to date?
  • Are safer recruitment principles embedded into your recruitment process?
  • Does every member of your team feel able to speak up when something doesn’t feel right?

These are the questions that strengthen organisations before problems arise.

Leadership Sets the Standard

Safeguarding culture starts with leadership. When leaders prioritise safeguarding, invest in training and create an environment where concerns can be raised openly, that culture filters through every level of the organisation.

The strongest nurseries are not those that simply comply with requirements. They are the ones that continually invest in developing their people. Because safeguarding is never “completed”. It evolves alongside your team, your children and the wider sector.

At MBK Early Years, we’ve always believed that safeguarding is far more than compliance.

It’s about creating a culture where children thrive because every adult understands their responsibility to keep them safe.

Our support includes:

  • Bespoke safeguarding training tailored to your setting.
  • Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) training and refresher programmes.
  • Safer Recruitment training to strengthen recruitment and selection processes.
  • Consultancy and ongoing leadership support to help embed safeguarding into everyday practice.

Our aim isn’t simply to help nurseries meet requirements.

It’s to help leaders build confident teams, stronger safeguarding cultures and environments where children, families and staff feel safe every single day.

Final Reflection

None of us wants to see another headline about safeguarding failures in early years.

Whilst we cannot change what has already happened, we can all play a part in strengthening the future.

That starts with;

  • Asking difficult questions.
  • Listening to our teams.
  • Investing in leadership.
  • And recognising that safeguarding isn’t something we prepare for when Ofsted calls.

It’s something we demonstrate every single day.
